What Is Grass Karting?
The Basics
Grass Karting has existed in the South Island of New Zealand for MANY years.
I found this picture from the 1960's on the Christchurch Grass Kart Club Website.
Since that era Grass Karting has evolved and developed.
The basic Kart is normally based on a standard track Kart chassis.
The Engines are typically production motorcycle engines.
All Karts have CLUTCHES. This allows for Standing starts.
Turf Saver tyres are used instead of the traditional Kart slick or wet tyres.
Mudflaps and front, side, and rear crash bars are normally fitted.
Races use a STANDING start, NOT a rolling start.
A competition Track has a length of 600 metres to 800 metres.
The Track Width is a minimum of 8 metres wide.
The starting straight is a minimum of 10 metres wide to match the starting grid width.
There are some Standardised Rules for Competition in New Zealand.
The lastest version is available here.
